They are well worth it, though im not sure about a separate pump + submersible UV. It's a hard investment to make, but they do so much and really do allow you to not put so much worrying into your tank. IMHO, I would go with an external S.M.A.R.T. UV filter, and hook it up to your already existing pumps/filters. Heres an example of my previous setup: http://kangar.eu/pics/large/DSCN3645.JPG The long tube is the UV. Water cycles though the 2x mechanical filters, then though the UV, then through a biological filter. Not the best solution, since UV will kill certain beneficial bacteria, but tainted water will kill beneficial bacteria on your biological filter, so either way no perfect solution. If you already have a good bio bacteria in place on the bio filter, UV before running water over it has worked great. I know money is always an issue, but would say do your research beforehand so you're not disappointed, and look into S.M.A.R.T. UV.
