..and this presents no problem what so ever. We thought he'd want to use some plants that are normally not available through conventional means, and thats why we offered up our cuttings - we were not trying to save a dime here and there. We've got plants here within GWAPA that only a handful of people in the US have. If he wants to use the regular stuff - that's fine with us, and we'll gladly provide them. It's good in a way, he'll aquascape with the bread and butter plants - it'll encourage people - show them you do not need have access to rare plants to scape well.
Sounds like the rare plants are the perfect things to bring in HIGH DOLLARS at the auction. When Claus brought over Pellia it was going for what over $80 a bag, I don't remember the max price now but it is fun. Every year I have been (only missed one year and probably this year stuck in the hotel room with our 10 mo old) there has been a hotly pursued plant. Plants bring in lots of money at the auctions....are great to have. Dry goods seem to me to bring in less.
BTW - did you guys read through the plant list? Almost sounds like a list of plants an 'American' scape would consist of. FYI - we tried numerous times to obtain a list of plants that Amano would like to use, equipment that he would need etc - all to no avail. Finally, through Tomoko, we were able to get a response to our queries.
This is not uncommon, Erik was really having to be persistent to get answers too.
Jay - there's a business deal between Jeff and Amano. He's bringing the equipment at his cost - it's up to him what he wants to do with it after the demo. We cannot force him to donate those items.
I agree, I would be bummed to not be able to bid on an Amano tank if I lived locally that said, how really cool that we get to see Amano do his stuff, with his tank and supplies. That will be a real treat too. Exactly the AGA doesnt' have the money to do the shipping, so it is nice that Jeff is having it shipped to the convention. After all he could of just had it shipped to TX, but then he wouldn't have gotten to see Amano aquascape it. All give and take, but I really hope I get to see this one!!!! (and not be stuck in the hotel room)
No one is 'nickle and diming' about the plants. That said, I beleive, a sizable portion of the revenues from the auction were due to FANs generous donation of plants last year. The plants we're getting for Amano, hopfully through FAN, should end up in the auction and not anywhere else.
It was amazing seeing what amano tossed aside last time, he would toss whole bunches of plants....was really disappointed in some of then. It was really cool to see how he choose what to do with the set up. It was all part of the learning experience and really cool. That is one reason why I think it would be cool to have him after lunch. People that wanted to stay and help prep and see what Amano was doing before his talk. It did easily take over an hour to prep. The gravel all had to be prepared too, and Karen/Charlene spent time before the convention washing substrate, collecting rocks/wood....etc. So someone should ask what he needs done.
An interesting thing was last time they ran a hose into the convention room to fill up the tank. A logistic that may not have been considered yet.
