Re: [AGA-mcm] Potential AGAF staff
I sent Ray an email letting him know the situation and what we're hoping to
do. He has yet to reply, but I don't think he'll say now.
Ben Belton is an awesome choice!
Re: some of the names that came up earlier.
Cavan Allen and Roger Miller are both good choices based on their knowledge
and experience. Roger in particular is a good choice thanks to his
personality and excellent writing skills. When asked previously if he
wanted to staff on a different site he said that he only wanted to be on one
site. He may change his mind for an AGA site, it wouldn't hurt to ask.
I'm more than a little leery of Cavan though. Call me paranoid, but he's on
staff with both Aquabotanic and Aquatic Plant Central. As petty as it may
sound/be they're pretty competitive sites and I would be hesitant to give
someone insight to the internal workings/politics of our forum that could be
turned around on another site before we had a chance to impliment them.
I think Diana should be given mod status because she's AGA staff and all AGA
staff should have that status. Robert may be miffed at us "stealing" her
but I don't see how we couldn't have an area for "Walstad Style" tanks on
the site.
I guess this is as good a time as any to bring up the topic of
multi-staffing. How do we want to deal with folks who are staff on other
sites, me included. Do we want to "steal" people or do we want to give new
folks, or folks who are no longer staffing a site the opportunity at AGAF?
I'm personally for not double-dipping. There seem to be fewer potential
problems that way. Paul K. would seem to me to be an exception. From what
I can tell he's at APC because they have a strong Crypt group and he pretty
much stays to that and the physiology/emersed culture sub-forums.
Overall, I think the moderators should be monitors and re-directors and not
be expected to maintain activity on the site. If 75% of our membership
visits we'll have plenty of expertise and lively discussion without having
to resort to relying on moderators to keep things moving. Paula would be a
great choice.
I guess that gets to the point of how many moderators do we need/want and
what traits do we want the mods to have? The answer? As my organic chem
professor said when asked how many of something to add in a reaction... "as
many as are needed". If all of us had mod rights and then we added four or
five others that should be enough for the whole group to cover the site. We
shouldn't be making people mods just because they have a lot of aquarium
experience and we want them on the site. If they want to talk tanks they'll
be there regardless. I didn't get a chance to see them in action in The
Day, but George and Karla are a perfect example. If they did a good job of
keeping the peace maintaining a discussion on APD and will stick to their
duties over time then YES they're great choices. If not, then they can
contribute best as the experienced aquarists that they are.
That's all until something else comes up.
Botanically yours,
Phil
