I'll add this too:  if there is any way not to grow plants,
someone has grown them that way successfully anyway.

The only real problem with a UG is the one you have with or
without plants and that is the substrate becoming dense
with detritus and turning hard and foul.  This needn't
happen at all but I think it's harder for it not to happen
than to happen.
