Re: [AGA Member] Pellia

It rained so much here last fall that I had java moss growing on the ground outside where I tossed tank water a few times. Talk about weird plants growing emersed! It died when it got too cold though...

Claus tells me that it also grows happily emersed in damp conditions, which
is why I tried propagating it on the windowsill. That worked very nicely
all winter, and shortly before NEC, I had 3 containers nice and thick with
it. The trouble is that as soon as the sun started heating up, I cooked it.
By a few days before NEC, I had 3 containers of green goo.

Interestingly, being lazy, I never cleaned the green goo out of the
containers, though I did move them out of the window. Two of the containers
had Flourite in them, the third had soil capped with fine gravel. The soil
container STILL is full of green goo... in both of the Flourite containers,
the Pellia has made a come-back.

Indeed, it's near bouyancy doesn't make it a lot easier to
emplace. In fact, I think a few of us lost track of ours
when we underestimated the requisite containment. Still,
it's an interesting property; most plants, excepting algae,
float if you break them from the tyrannical bonds of the
substrate.

I'm curious how this ersatz mobility effects the plant in
its natural environs. It seems to tear easily, so I'd
suspect that a moderately large clump would tend to break
off under current if the clump was anchored or snagged. It
doesn't use roots yet it tends to reside at the bottom of
whatever water body it's in?

It sinks, but it is not heavy, so any small current will
wash it around your tank. I still have to have mine tied

I like the fact that it sinks.
