Re: [AGA-sc] Re: [AGA-mcm] Web Site

Karen is totally right...on number of hits...Jay says 600, for his site

..I know the hits on the krib are always fun to look at, ie 1 million a month, sometimes close to 2 mil (maybe over with the aquascaping contest), some of the other clubs in the hundreds of thousands, even our local club like 10 or something. Or at least that is if memory serves me correctly and I do have total preg brain

off to sleep, sick kid sleeping, I have learned to try and sleep when he does.

Merry christmas to all,

Love
Kathy

I think we just let it sit. I wasn't aware of the fact that you DIDN'T have
the other years archived on the site... since I have access to most of the
same photos on my own computer, I honestly hadn't looked. That's why I
asked the question when it came up on APC. (though I solved that particular
problem by uploading the photo they were all looking for onto that site,
since it was mine anyway)

I don't have a strong preference whether we keep them all on the site. Some
people may find it fun to look back through them, but I certainly understand
that graphics take up a lot of space. (I'm trying, at the moment, to find a
notebook computer tht is reasonably priced and will run with a pen tablet,
and be able to hold lots of digital photos... not an easy task!<g>) Those
needs must be balanced, and Erik gets to call the shots there as far as I'm
concerned.

If Jay loves his software so much, and wants the "gallery" to become a more
permanent archive, maybe we should suggest (at some point, NOT now) that he
produces CD's of the annual gallery that people can purchase, just as they
do the convention and contest DVD's.

As far as how many "hits" his gallery is getting, we all know those numbers
can be deceiving. And the BIGGEST difference is taht he has made sure that
EVERYONE on EVERY list knows it's there. It is no easier to find than the
photos for other years have been. It's just a matter of going to look for
them. I think we've been reluctant to "spam" the lists with AGA
announcements of that sort for fear of being obnoxious. Unfortunately, this
is the NJAS style, and Jay seems to have picked it up.

In any case, it's probably best to let things simmer down for a while at
this point. We all have more important, and hopefully more enjoyable things
to be doing right now!

Erik, don't let it bug you... I'm sorry I brought it up. I had no idea it
would become so contentious. But this is a good example of why I wonder
about the wisdom of keeping Jay on the Advisory Committee list.

If he's saying "in the future", it's nothing to do with the software
running on the site (that Jay seems so fond of glomming onto in every
discussion), but his own internal stuff that he uploads.

Incidentally, my software (kathyanderik.com-code) also produced photos of
640 pixels wide last year, so I'm not sure why it seems so different.

But if there's a problem, you guys are going to have to tell him that.
There's no way I can do this now. I'm plumb out of criticising this year.
This is 3 for 3 in the last few weeks; I just can't do any more.

He told me they are at 600 and he can do 800 but "that's in
the future"

Jay can definitely upload bigger pictures. I think it's
his choice of

I've never kept the old pictures around for longer than a
year. Didn't
really think it was that important as they weren't a
critical part of the
AGA site, just sort of a "fun" temporal thing...and not
really well sorted
(of course I think they are worse-sorted this year...
i.e., left as "by
person" rather than mixed together for each category...
that was actually
the only difficult work I did last year, merging in all
the timelines
for 4 different photographers and trying to pick the
best).

Anyway, I want to ask Jay if there isn't a way to make
the
pics in the gallery bigger.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting changing what Jay did with the
2004 pix. I don't

I just don't want him to get his hands on the old
stuff
that worked better,
and make it worse. (and I THINK there were pix there
from as long ago as
the first Amano year... maybe further back)

The problem is, finding a tactful way of saying, "Oh,
don't bother putting
all that work into making them worse."<g>

I am fairly sure that the reason there is no link to
them
at the moment has
nothing to do with the fact that Jay hasn't set them
up
in his "gallery"
style.

Well, we could take another poll ;-)

or

we could put the old convention pics back up the way
they
were and then show counter with more hits on the old
pics
than the 2004 pics. ;-)

or

we can just leave it for a while and eventually
change
it
(more work for Erik)

or

just leave 2004 as it is and put the old pics back
(my
pref).

I don't think the gallery is awful, even though it's
not my
style -- it's so, so *forumish*.

We had more than just AGA2K3 before, didn't we? I
don't
know if I'd put the old pics up as part of this
gallery. I
like the old way better too, so I would not want to
change
the other photos, but I doubt it's worth the pains
and
hard
feelings to change the 2004 gallery.

So that's my shadow vote. But I leave it to Erik's
aesthetic sensibilities -- besides, it'd be work for
him,
votin's easy.

Erik,

You can link me to "old" pictures and I will be
more
than happy to upload
them to AGA Gallery as - AGA 2003 - event.

Hi Erik,

Roger Miller just mentioned over on APC that there
is
no longer a link on
the web site to the earlier convention photos. Is
this on purpose?
