Vinny, Katty and all, This bill, proposed by the ruralist group in the Congress would increase the clearing area of forests in Amazonia from 20 to 50% and of savannah, from 50 to 80%. But the proposal received a ready answer in the media and from the public opinion. E-mails, faxes and letters were sent to the congress members; petitions passed through internet. Sarney, the Environment Minister, went against to law since the first moment, seconded by president Cardoso. With all this, thanks God, the law was defeated in May. Thus, at least this battle was not lost by us. It was the best birthday gift that I received :) The URL that Katty was talking about can be seen at: http://www.edf.org/pubs/newsreleases/2000/may/i_rainforest.html Zeco http://sites.netscape.net/zecocarvalho/ -----Mensagem Original----- De: Kathy Olson <kathy@thekrib.com> Para: <apisto@majordomo.pobox.com> Enviada em: segunda-feira, 12 de junho de 2000 23:27 Assunto: Re: To our Brazilian readers Vinny and gang, It looks like this bill may have been shelved. Check out the web page www.ran.org. It talks about a bill proposed in May that has been shelved. Not sure if it is the same one or not.
