Eric, This fits into a project I've just started. I have a list going of all the names given apistos. This includes valid (scientific), invalid (scientific), nomen nudi, & trade names for past and present species. I'm most of the way through the more recent names, but still have to go back and pull out some from the pre-80s. I'm also correlating all of the names to the name generally accepted by science or present hobby sources. So far the number is around 300. Congratulations! You have just added 2 more to the list. "A. ortmani" is obviously a misspelling of A. ortmanni. The question is, is it the true ortmanni (a regani-group species) or are they using the old trade name for A. steindachneri? A. paner, and A. paraca are new to me, but I can make some wild guesses. A. paner might be a shortened misspelling of "A. panderini" or A. panduro. A. paraca might be a misspelling of A. sp. Arica, a trade name for A. uaupesi, or even A. sp. Aruana, a trade name for A. sp. Araguaia Red-face. Maybe even A. arua, who can tell? If you buy some and figure out what they are, please let me know so I can correlate the names with the right fish. If anyone has an unusual name that they think I might not have, please email me with the info. Hopefully this will remove some of the confusion in buying apistos.
