Re: Wild Rams

Rik,

I think Steev gave some good info on Lymphocystis.
Like nearly all viral
diseases there is no medication that actually
kills the virus. I have
occasionally cut off the infected parts (where
feasible). The use of
Acriflavin & other disinfectants is there only to
prevent the wound from
becoming reinfected by some bacteria, etc. I think
- if you have Lymphocystis
- that you give the fish good water and good food
& let the fish cure itself.

I've seen encysted worms, usually diagenetic
tremetodes, on lots of pond
raised fish (usually livebearers), these are
usually harmless, if only a few,
but unsightly. In these cases I would use a
dissecting needle, open the cyst,
and remove the 'worm'. Then the fish are kept in
clean water & checked for
possible bacterial infection of the wound.

One last thing. I don't recommend antibiotics
unless you know what you're treating. In
particular it's a waste of time & money to use
penicillin in most cases. Penicillin is a
gram-positive antibiotic and virtually no
bacterial fish disease is caused by gram-positive
bacteria.
