Mike, That sure makes sense to me! Because I kept them by themselves in a 20 L. I find that not too many Apistos do well with other cichlids. For me those that have spawned and protected the fry were - Agassizi, Rio Mamore, Nijsseni, Panduro, Gibbiceps and Cacatuodes. As you stated, always Keep in mind that it depends which other Cichlid you keep them with. There were others that spawned successfully but I had to remove the fry because they couldn't protect them from their tank companions (i.e - My Bioteocus Opercularis spawned with D. Filamentosus as their tank companion, but I had to remove the fry because they couldn't protect them from the Fil.)
