Re: conductivity question

Coby,

Conductivity & hardness are actually 2 different things. Conductivity is a
measure of electrolytes (elements & compounds that promote conduction of
electricity (electrons, actually). Minerals that harden water can also conduct
electricity. Other minerals (sodium chloride, for instance) do not harden water
very much but increase conductivity greatly. It seems that you have some source
that doesn't harden water, but does increase conductivity. As Dave said this is
most commonly found in organic compounds dissolved in water, but sand & rocks
(even wood) with quantities of chlorides, nitrates, sulfates & even carbonates
that dissolve moderately slowly can cause the problem. Your Dicrossus do not
like high conductivity, but A. cacatuoides, A. borellii, & Pelvicachromis
pulcher are sometimes found in waters in the wild with conductivity around 500
µS. Actually, the Common Krib has been seen breeding in brackish areas of the
Niger delta.
