Hi Erick,
  They sound like notophthalmus to me. I do believe most come out of Manaus.
I recall years ago (before dwarf pikes became popular) they would often come
in as a very few1 to 2 inch contaminants in large batches of cardinal
tetras. At the time, I had access to a few wholesalers.  On a few occasions,
I was able to pick out a few very small specimans if I carefully went thru
all the tanks with cardinal tetras in it.  They all turned out to be
notophthalmus.  Also, see the included link.for distinguishing features.
