Thanks to everyone who replied to my email. I'll surely look up Henry at DAD's when I'm in Edmonton next month. Sylvian, thanks for the offer, and please let me know when they are ready to be shipped. I'll try and get some good pictures up of my A. cruzi?? so you all can take a look and see. So again thanks everyone. And don't forget, if you live in Canada and have apisto's that you don't mind selling and shipping, drop me an email. Last year (ACA 2002), I was given a very difficult time at Newark, NJ,=20 Airport. After learning that I was carrying two well packed, three-inch=20 Hemichromis lifalili, intending to bring them into the cabin with me, the= =20 airline staff demanded that I leave the security area and escorted me back= =20 out into the main terminal. From there I was interrogated by someone from= =20 central control who was called to the seen specifically for that purpose. = I=20 was told that I would have to pay an additional $70.00 to carry my fish int= o=20 the cabin. Rather than pay the money, I explained that I had spoken with t= he=20 appropriate airline personnel prior to booking the flight and was assured= =20 that I could carry my two fish into the cabin with me at no extra charge.= =20=20 The security officer explained that such was not airport policy, to which I= =20 responded that my flight was leaving in ten minutes. By this time, I had= =20 been at the airport for over an hour-and-a-half. In the end, I was allowed to board, fish in hand, without having to pay for= =20 the privilege or further hassle, but this was an experience that I don't ca= re=20 to repeat. Continental will accept pets on their planes, arranged in advance, as cargo= =20 for $80.00, but according to the airline's Live Animal Desk, will only acce= pt=20 dogs, cats, rabbits and birds. Does anyone here on the list have any information or recommendations=20 regarding getting our fish to Cincinnati successfully? I've already asked= =20 someone at the host club about it via email and was told "I can=E2=80=99t s= peak for=20 the airlines, so I would suggest that you call the carrier that you are=20 considering using and ask them." Been there, done that thank you. All the best, Randall Kohn Chester, NJ Rik, Thanks for the promo. Unfortunately I won't be able to bring anything this time. Ever since last December, when airlines started X-raying or visually inspecting every piece of baggage, I have found it impossible to take fish on aircraft as baggage - carry on or checked in. Before December I could get them on mixed in my luggage, but not now that everything going on the plain is checked out. Some airlines will take them as air freight at a high cost, but that is all. Have others found this to be true? Does anyone know of any domestic US airlines that permits taking fish as baggage? --Boundary_(ID_HdVpYFxJrftNmqGObNYdJg) Content-type: message/rfc822 Received: from LeeH920226@aol.com by imo-r05.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v34.22.) id 2.18c.1a246424 (16781) for <apisto@v2.listbox.com>; Sun, 11 May 2003 13:53:35 -0400 (EDT) Date: Sun, 11 May 2003 13:53:35 -0400 (EDT) From: LeeH920226@aol.com Subject: Re: Fish as Baggage To: apisto@v2.listbox.com Message-id: <18c.1a246424.2befe81f@aol.com> MIME-version: 1.0 X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Mac sub 45 Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Lines: 15 In a message dated 5/11/03 12:59:34 PM, R3K1@aol.com writes: << Does anyone here on the list have any information or recommendations regarding getting our fish to Cincinnati successfully? >> I suggest driving there -- cheaper and almost as quick when you consider the delays at the airports at each end plus the hassle and uncertainty of fish transport. One problem is that the fish Kullander used to describe A. cruzi were from 3 different river systems & represent at least 2 different species! Only specimens similar to the holotype, from the Rio Mazán, should be considered the true A. cruzi. Adding to this the problem is, that commercial collectors list nearly every regani-group fish that has abdominal stripes as 'A. cruzi', adds more confusion. Uwe's Atlas pictures at least 3 different different species as A. cruzi. The only photo in Römer's Atlas that I'm sure is the same as the holotype of A. cruzi is the bottom photo on page 359. The true A. cruzi is fairly rare in the hobby. Males can easily be recognized by their unspotted, bicolored, tail - orange in the upper lobe & pink in the lower lobe.
