Re: couple questions

Yvan,

Which book to recommend depends on what your friend is interested in. For general information, I like the Baensch Aquarium Atlas. There is a lot of good information in it. The strange thing about me is that I still use my original aquarium reference a lot too. I bought this book back in the early 1970's & it is still valuable, and now can be bought second-hand for about $5 at any used book store. It's Innes's Exotic Aquarium fishes. If you want this book, I recommend the last issue before TFH got a hold on it, changed some photos, put a glossy cover on it, & overcharged for it.

As for the blue-green algae, I think that the darkening the tank method should work. Once you have it reduced to a minimum, do a major water change, dose it with Erythromycin (Maracyn is Mardel's trade name for the same), do a major water change, & see if that doesn't get rid of it. Usually this problem runs its course in dimly lit tanks. Increasing the light encourages the growth of green algae which out-compete the cyanobacteria for nutrients. It should get rid of the blue-green stuff, but then you will have to work on the green algae. If it isn't one thing, it's another.

Hi All,

A friend of mine was offered a 55gal tank and asked me about a good
beginner's book. I've been keeping fish for the last 20 years but only 6 in
the US so I do not know of a good book to advise to him. Any suggestions?

My 2nd question concerns cyanobacteria. I have some growing in two 75 gal
tanks. I let my tanks unattended while I was gone for 10 days and that is
how they appeared. I am not for using products but despite weekly removal
and bi-weekly water changes they are still in. I am careful about feeding,
plant detritus monitoring... and therefore there is low OM in the tank.
Erythromycin is supposed to do the job. Would someone know where I could get
some (that is more than 10 tablets like what you find in stores) at a
reasonable price? Also, are there other products that can be used
(kanamycin, other.?).

Thanks all,

Have a great week
