Not too stupid. A sponge filter is any filter that uses a synthetic
sponge as its main filtration element. Usually they are air-driven
(though one might argue that the AquaClear-300 types are also sponge
filters because they use a sponge!). The key in sponge filters is
simplicity; usually they are ONLY a sponge with some minimal structure to
drive the water through the sponge (typically an uplift tube stuck into
the sponge). Because of this, they are very inexpensive, and can be built
yourself with a little ingenuity. You clean them by wringing the sponge
in old tank water in a bucket at water changes.
Some popular ones include:

Tetra Billi, Brilliant, PHAS, etc: Air-driven, suction cupped onto the
side of the tank. Greenish small tubing.

Hydro (Lustar) Sponge Filters: can be air or powerhead driven. Sit on the
tank bottom with a heavy base. I like these, but it's hard/impossible to
find them in local stores. I usually mail-order them.

Jungle "Dirt Magnet" series. Tiny clear uplift tube and big flat sponge.
I don't like em, but they are small enough you can use them in a 5-gallon
tank.

Where to get them: some LFS's stock them. Mail order houses: Daleco, Pet
Warehouse, MOPS, etc. See

I think Kaycy & Darren are selling the Hydro models too.
