Re: A. borelli

hi lisa, you have selected an excelent little Apisto to work with! I
usaully take the mother and her fry and siphon them gently into a 5
gallon or even 2.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter. The method i use
is as follows; I use small pvc caves i can look into when eggs are
laid i always know because she turns banna yellow! when the eggs hatch
and they are wigglers you can then siphon the wigglers and catch moma
and place them in a little tank with say a little tuft of java moss.
Most European and hence American Aquarists pull the eggs or young away
from the female I know that as long as conditions are correct you
will be in for a real treat as she tends her young like a mother hen.
Alternativly you can spawn them as pairs in 10 gallon tanks and never
move female or male just leave them with the fry just be sure to put
plenty of java moss or nylon mops to give the male some cover, mother
borelli's are very protective mothers. After a while if you are lucky
The male will join in and help care for the young as well!! my
borelli's are the yellow variety and they both care for there young
the male even picks them up in his mouth and keeps the school
together!!! Try it the natural way as long as you have the correct
water chemistry parameters and cover so they feel safe (hey they are
at the bootom of the food chain) you will have a most enjoyable fish!
The avg. spawn i get is about 50 fry from adult females. They can lay
eggs about every two weeks or so. Let me know how you make out.
