Mike,
>From what I have read and heard smaller the better. If your gravel is too
big small fry...aka wrigglers can get caught in the gravel.

Have heard this both from other apisto folks and experienced it.  Both
David Soares and the Schmettkamp book rec. sand or fine gravel.
