I read in one of the standard American aquarium magazines that a build-up of nitrates stunts growth. I think I may have confirmed this for myself after I started using a nitrate absorbing resin and weekly water changes. My two Crenicara punctulata seemed to burst into an enourmous size in a matter of weeks.
