 <delurk>
Hi everyone. Delurking seems to be popular right
now, so here I am. And I don't mind a few wet-noodle lashings, as long as it's
protein-enriched. Preferably angel-hair pasta.
    First an introduction (I read
an old 'intro' thread archived on the Krib, I thought it sounded like a good
idea for delurkers). My name is Andrew, I'm 30 (still feels wierd to say that)
and I'm an architect. Which means I have much less free time than I'd like. When
I'm not working or sleeping, I study for and take my Architectural Registration
Exams (9 of 'em - don't let your kids grow up to be architects unless they know
how many hoops they gotta jump through to get there), I practice kung-fu, and I
work out at the gym. My aquarium is supposed to be my little 'escape'. Really
it's just another excuse to spend money, not like I need one...
I'm a newcomer to the hobby,
done a lot of research thanks to the web, I have 25g tank up and running now for
the past several weeks, ready to go, 4 silver-tipped tetras zipping around the
tea-brown water, nice rocks and driftwood and caves, but...no apistos yet.
Problem is, my local fish store has but a small selection, and doesn't seem to
receive new ones very often. And I think I want to start with a pair (or 3) of
A. cacatuoides, which seems like a popular yet relatively easy and inexpensive
fish to keep (the shop is offering one particular pair of apistos - I forget
which species - for 40 bucks? whew, I'll pass.). Not to be found at my LFS...not
for the past 2 or 3 months anyway. The rest of the apistos there are okay, but
as a newbie I need a bit more flash (read color) and less esoteric subtlety
(read muted pale brownish grey) from my first fish.
So I thought I'd ask if
anyone knows of a good source with relatively wide selection in San Francisco.
Outside of the city is okay, I guess, but in town is better.
    I've thought about getting
fish shipped to me, but it just doesn't seem feasible as I can't leave work to
take them home, and I can't wait at home to receive a shipment.
    Anyway, as someone whose has
no actual apistos yet, I'm sorry I don't have anything more interesting to
contribute to the discussion group, except to say I've really enjoyed reading
the postings, I've learned very much about keeping these fish and I hope to be
able to share my experiences with you all in the future.
Thanks in advance - if you feel email is a more
appropriate reply venue then please do so.
