Re: [GSAS-board] Plant auction

Guys, you're overthinking -- we've already solved this problem years ago. Fixed price is just like the rest of the auction, except that it's fixed price. You must have a bidder number to participate. If you want a fixed price item, the person monitoring the table fills out a same old same old auction tag, writing down your bidder's number and the (fixed) price on the tag. (If the item is a split item, it's a pre-tagged pink tag, just like with the live auction.) The tags are sent via runners to the back where the computer folks enter them along with all the other auction items. The bidder is either a member, or has surrendered their driver's license. If they don't pay, we know where they live. :)
Remember also that we've sold memberships this way at the auctions, as $15
fixed-price items.
The bit I was saying earlier about cash sales is that we can do this with
any auction item, live or fixed. In this case, the person pays, with
exact change, and the table monitor writes "CASH" in the bidder number
spot. Both cash and the tag are sent to the back, where the tag is
recorded (we have a special bidder number for CASH, i.e. #999) and the
money stashed.

Hi Susan,

Good question, how about this as an idea.  We could have a member with a
clipboard that
monitored the tables.  They could answer questions and if someone wanted an
item they with mark
down the item number; bidder number; and amount.  Periodically (maybe every 15
minutes - 30
minutes?) the page would be turned it into the cashier for processing.

I like the idea of a fixed price also, but when do people pay? It would be
quite easy for
someone to forget to pay during the excitement of the auction and in their
plant pile.

For example I like the idea of "Buy It Now"
tables for more generic items (maybe a couple of tables with "$5 and less"
and "$5 - $10").  If we set those tables up away from the auction area the
disturbance to bidding, runners, auctioneer should be minimal.

If we could distribute a price sheet for the fixed price items, that might
reduce foot traffic
to that area. People would be informed about the items for sale but could also
stay in their
seats paying attention to the auction--unless there was something they wanted
to examine for
purchase.
