Re: [GSAS-Member] excitement: a place to overwinter shubunkins!

Trish: Did one of the sarasas from you have lots of black in the tail? I
admit I didn't examine them closely upon receipt but started them
acclimating to the stock tank as soon as Larry delivered them to me. I
emptied the entire stock tank yesterday and had 3 big orange and white
fish, but one had lots of black in the tail. No other shubunkin
characteristics and I don't remember buying a shubunkin with so much
orange in the body. Most of of my shubunkins have black speckles over the
body as well. So this may be one that came from you. That means the great
blue heron only got ONE from this tank! There were also 3
young-of-the-year that look like they aren't shubunkins...all dark with
just the beginning of an olivey orange glow (turning to orange).

My second whiskey barrel mini-pond yielded 2 shubunkins...one remaining
from the goldfish rescue in my neighbor's pond AND my absolute favorite
shubunkin of all (a gorgeous well-balanced tri-color with a fantastic
flowy tail)....and I hadn't seen this one since the initial GBH raids.
Smart fish.....very good at hiding! And I was certain he/she was LONG
GONE.

All told I have 16 survivors...much better than expected and this doesn't
include 3 young-of-the-year from the sarasa tank and 2 from the shubunkin
tank. I didn't think ANY of the youngsters would make it as cold as it's
been this winter.

That just leaves the 2 koi I bought at the koi show outside and since
there are only 2 fish in that 150g stock tank, they should be OK (knock on
wood).

What an adventure this weekend!
