Re: [AGA-sc] TAG 2005

I think that what Cheryl said was...the biggest cost for Eagle Press was number of plates, so printing 40 full-sized pages would be similar in cost than printing 40 small-sized pages. So it won't be DOUBLE the cost to have double the space. But it'd still be more, especially for mailing. I wouldn't want to see something much thinner than 40 pages -- which is why I made that remark about Cichlid News.

As I mentioned more or less in passing at Ghazanfar's house, James Elliot
of Eagle Press warned me that the price of printing TAG was going to go up
in the coming year. It's not that bad, really; only about $200 more per
issue.

Here's an official quote per 1000 copies:

$2500.00 insides
$400.00 cover

That's not too bad.

He also suggested that we think about converting TAG to a "regular"
magazine size. He says we can sell more advertising space more
efficiently,
add pages more conveniently, and that he doesn't think postage would be
that much more. I'm not sure about that last one, but I can look in to it
if we are truly interested.

I am interested in exploring the cost, unless someone comes up with a
downside. My reasons:

I think it's worth looking into, but, I do have some reservations.

1. I have lately felt constrained in layout. Many of these tank shots
would
be better if they could be bigger.

I agree, the layout could be MUCH nicer with full sized pages. We also end
up NOT using a lot of the photos because of space consideration. BUT,
unless I am wrong, we would end up with half the pages or double the cost.
So we'd still be trying to fit the same amount of material into the same
amount of space, just laid out differently. Wouldn't it be kinda floppy
and, well, THIN at double the size and half the pages? Also, what do you
do about advertisers? If you keep giving them a whole page, you've given
them twice the amount of territory. But if you give them the same amount of
territory they have currently, they are sharing the page with other stuff.
Will they be OK with that? Will they pay more for a larger full-sized ad?

2. Karen ALWAYS gives me too much stuff. :-) Gosh, I haven't devoted an
entire page to the AGA logo in just AGES!

Hey, don't temp me gal... we've got such a NICE logo now!<g>

3. Tomoko says she MIGHT have a deal with Amano's Aquajournal to publish
in
English. I think that we could lose a customer base if we're not careful.

I certainly don't want to sound complacent, and I, personally, will be very
glad to have Aqua Journal in English (though we will lose one good article
per issue, as it would be redundant) But most of the Aqua Journal is
written by Amano. Most of it is strictly pertaining to aquascaping, and
when you really look at it, While it is heavy on beautiful photographs, it's
light on information. So, while I think many people including me will be
happy to get it, I don't know that it will be viewed as a replacement for
TAG.
